📣 Exclusive Record Store Day picks from Grimey’s!
April 19, 2024
Hey y’all. Your favorite Gen X executive producer is a little sleepy because she stayed up too late listening to the new Pearl Jam album. [taps earpiece] Wait — I’m being told some local artist also had a big release at midnight? Whoops. Oh well, not gonna torture myself about it. Onward!

What's CITY Talking About?
❤️🖤 Classes Resume at Covenant School Campus
The Covenant kiddos made an emotional return to their original building for the first time since last year’s horrific mass shooting, but the turmoil continues for that school community. Many families spent this week in court trying to prevent the release of the shooter’s writings while keeping up the pressure at the Capitol in protest of the TNGOP’s plan to arm teachers. 🏛️ Voucher? I Hardly Know Her
After a statewide outcry from parents, school boards, and legislators, Gov. Bill Lee’s voucher initiative appears to be stalling out, with the House and Senate unable to agree on how, exactly, it would work. That said, if the honorable folks who spent this year’s session worrying about lettuce vaccines and chemtrails figure out a plan, the bill could still find its way to the floor. [Tennessee Lookout]

🤸🏾♀️ Fisk Gymnast Morgan Price Makes History
In 2022, Fisk University launched its groundbreaking gymnastics program, the first-ever at an HBCU. Last weekend, they hit the record books again, courtesy of sophomore (and Lebanon native) Morgan Price, who won the all-around title at the USA Gymnastics' 2024 Women's Collegiate National Championship — another first for an HBCU. Flippin’ amazing! [CBS News]
🐯 Tiger Cubs Make Debut at Nashville Zoo
We’ve got baby tigers, people! The three Sumatran tiger cubs born at the Nashville Zoo last October are now out and about in their enclosure, learning the ropes and, one presumes, being consistently adorable. Naturally I must ask: If not friend, then why friend-shaped?? [The Tennessean]
🏒 Barry Trotz Gets the Preds Back to the Playoffs
Speaking of large felines, our OG boys in gold have found their way back to the postseason under former coach-turned-general manager Barry Trotz. The playoff puck is set to drop Sunday or Monday in our first-round series against the Canucks, but until then you can enjoy this piece on how the team regained its winning ways by … skipping a chance to see U2 at the Sphere in Vegas? 🎧 BONUS: Record Store Day Picks from Grimey’s!
Tomorrow is Record Store Day, a self-explanatory annual celebration that always brings a slate of incredible exclusives to our local indie shops. I reached out to my pal Doyle Davis over at Grimey’s New & Preloved Music to get his top picks for 2024:
- “I’m personally excited about the live albums from Talking Heads and Television, plus the expanded Lowell George solo album and the Jazz Dispensary release.
- "Our customers seem very excited about:
- the Olivia Rodrigo/Noah Kahan split 7-inch,
- the Paramore/David Byrne split 12-inch,
- the Paramore remix LP,
- Noah Kahan’s LP,
- plus releases by new artists like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Masie Peters.
- "Record Store Day has skewed younger and younger over the last few years which is awesome because that means we’re cultivating a customer base for the future — and it’s so cool to see the younger fans and kids mingling with our grizzled veterans.”
There may, in fact, be too much on the schedule in Nashville tomorrow: Assuming you’re not standing in line at a record store, we’ve got the dedication of Diane Nash Plaza, our Earth Day festival in Centennial Park, and Nashville SC kicks off at 6:30 p.m. against the Messi buzzsaw in Miami. Weather looks to stay mostly dry, and temps will dip down into “too chilly for the pool” range, so take those sweaters for one last (?) spin.
Have fun and make good choices,
Whitney Pastorek
