🥊 A Morgan Wallen smackdown!
May 24, 2024
🇺🇸 Happy Memorial Day weekend, Nashville! This is Margaret, your friendly neighborhood Hey Nashville editor, with my first send for y’all. Our daily newsletter will start landing in your inbox very soon! For today, I’m giving you the five news stories that caught my eye this week.
😎 But first, what are your favorite summer activities? We’re compiling a list, and we’d love to hear from you. My 6-year-old hung up her own list on the fridge and has been adding to it every day. I need to come up with some other ideas or else I’ll be spending the entire summer at splash pads (and yes, I’m gonna make a list of the best local splash pads for y’all).

What's CITY Talking About?
🏛️ Metro Council Votes Against Morgan Wallen’s Sign for New Bar
Imagine a large aerial sign sticking out of 107 4th Ave North with Morgan Wallen’s name brightly lit for all to see. Leave a bad taste in your mouth? Well, the Metro Council agrees with you, and on Tuesday they overwhelmingly ruled against the company proposing such a sign for Wallen’s new bar. [WSMV]
- The council specifically cited Wallen’s behavior as reasoning for their rejection. According to Councilmember At-Large Delishia Porterfield, “We want to make sure that Nashville was a supportive place for everyone, so I don’t want to see a billboard with the name of a person who’s throwing chairs off of balconies and who is saying racial slurs, using the n-word, so I’m voting no.”

🐶 Love Animals? Consider Fostering.
Metro Animal Care and Control desperately needs volunteers to foster pets in their homes. The animal shelter is full, and they’re no longer accepting walk-ins from owners surrendering their unwanted pets. My family has fostered animals with Metro Animal Care and Control before, and it’s always a rewarding experience for pet lovers. And adoptions are free as long as the cicadas are singing! [WPLN]

🌳 Turns out Spending More Money Leads to Better Parks
Huh, who would’ve guessed? For years, Nashville’s city park ratings on the Trust for Public Land’s ParkScore have declined. ParkScore ranks park systems in the 100 most populated U.S. cities; Nashville rose 15 points this year and is now at number 78. Yeah, still not great. This is after a citywide spending increase of $81 per capita — still lower than the national average of $124. One reason Nashville scores low? A lack of walkability to city parks. An increase in public transit might raise the score ... [WPLN]
✊🏿 We Don’t Want Your Racist Flyers Around Here
A North Nashville neighborhood was recently bombarded with racist flyers promoting a Kentucky KKK chapter, but CM Delishia Porterfield (she’s busy) isn’t having it. She requested permission to bring a late-filed resolution on Tuesday to address the distribution of leaflets, and the council agreed to suspend the rules in order to pass a resolution condemning white supremacy. Councilmember Russ Bradford added that the leaflets have also been found in Donelson. [Nashville Banner]
🎥 The Belcourt Is Partying Like It’s 1999
And Mayor Freddie O’Connell is digging it. Next month, the Belcourt is showing 25 movies that originally aired in 1999, and O’Connell reviewed 15 of them for the Nashville Scene, including “The Matrix,” “Toy Story 2,” and “Office Space.” Why was 1999 such a good year for movies? Which ones are you going to check out? [Nashville Scene]
Memorial Day is a time to honor fallen troops, and we’ve got plenty of events around town for the long weekend. On Sunday, tour the Mother Church and listen to live music for free at their annual Ryman Community Day — make sure to bring a Tennessee ID, as this deal is just for locals. Afterward, take the family to Nashville Shores to see some fireworks. On Monday, run, walk, or watch the 5K Memorial Day Dash at Fort Negley Historic Park — there’s even a patriotic-themed costume contest! Let’s hope the rain holds off. 😬
Have a great weekend, Nashville!
