šŸ© What’s up with that weird Dunkin’ wall?

June 5, 2024 Ā· — Margaret Kingsbury

šŸš€ It’s launch time, Nashville! I, Margaret Kingsbury, am here with your first full edition of Hey Nashville. Thank you so much for starting your day with us, and thanks to our exclusive launch sponsor Tecovas, our Western wear faves, for their support. I hope this newsletter gives you a little bit of joy along with the news every morning. Now, let’s get to it.

What's CITY Talking About?

šŸŽ‰ City Cast Nashville: Launching Soon!

Hey Nashville’s sister podcast, City Cast Nashville, will launch on June 11! Tune in to listen to our fantastic host, Grace Fuisz, interview amazing folks from around town. The podcast has a terrific lineup of episodes ready to go next week, including conversations with Mayor Freddie O’Connell and the Nashville Severe Weather crew, as well as a guide to Bonnaroo. Dust off your headphones and get ready to listen. [šŸŽ§ City Cast Nashville]

šŸŽø Country Music’s Biggest Weekend Has Arrived

CMA Fest begins tomorrow. (Deep breaths.) Both free and ticketed concerts will be held in many areas around downtown from Thursday through Sunday. Here’s a guide to help you plan your weekend. [WKRN]

  • Even if you’re not planning to attend, you should probably still be aware of road closures. [WKRN]

šŸŖ ā€œQuality of Lifeā€ Complaints Lead to Market Closure

The Metro Nashville Police Department closed down Star Market on Buchanan Street in North Nashville Monday, citing ā€œprolonged disruption of quality of lifeā€ in the neighborhood. Police have responded to reports of violence at the market more than 400 times over the last five years. The two operators have been charged with money laundering, organized retail crime, and attempted theft of property. [The Tennessean]

šŸ© What’s Up with That Weird Wall at Dunkin’?

You know the one I’m talking about, East Nashville: the new Dunkin’ on Gallatin. Developers asked to eschew zoning laws to build Dunkin’s traditional rectangular design, but the Metro Board of Zoning Appeals denied their request. In response, the developers built a long wall with windows and nothing behind it, because obviously that’s … better? Several other businesses are currently asking for zoning variances, and if they, too, are rejected, random walls added to new buildings might become a fad. [Nashville Scene]

Where Is It?

A mural on a red brick building. The mural says "Wish for Peace" in light blue letters against a white background. Origami birds in various colors fly away from the words.
This is one of my favorite local murals. (Margaret Kingsbury/City Cast Nashville)

Nashville has oodles of murals, but do you know where this one is?

Every Wednesday, we’ll play the ā€˜Where Is It?’ game. I’ll post a picture, and you can email me your guesses about where in Nashville the picture was taken. The first person to guess correctly gets eternal fame and glory by having their name posted in the following Wednesday’s newsletter. Almost as good as a Grammy. šŸ†

What To Do

Wednesday, June 5

One more thing. If you venture downtown this week, check out the north block of Second Avenue, which has been rebuilt after the 2020 Christmas bombing and is now open to the public. [NewsChannel 5]

I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow, Nashville!
