NashSevereWx gives storm advice 🌪️

June 12, 2024 · – Margaret Kingsbury

Happy Thursday! The end of the week will be here in no time. If you’re heading for Bonnaroo, make sure to pack some extra water bottles and wear sunscreen. This weekend is going to be the hottest one of the year so far.

Thanks so much to our exclusive launch sponsor Tecovas, our Western wear faves, for their support.

What's CITY Talking About?

🌪️ A Chat with Local Weather Heroes

I had two grandmothers within spitting distance of the Madison and Hendersonville tornado last year. At the time, I was glued to the Nashville Severe Weather X/Twitter account, texting updates to Mom — who was on the phone with my grandmothers. I do not say this lightly: the three guys behind the account, now a website and newsletter, are heroes. They were gracious enough to sit down with us and chat all things weather. When I heard about the podcast’s June lineup, this was the episode I was most excited about. (My grandmothers made it out safely.) [🎧 City Cast Nashville]

🩷 Step Right up and Get Your Free Mammogram

There’s now a low-cost way to get that yearly mammogram. A mobile mammogram unit, which looks like a big ole pink tractor-trailer, is providing free or low-cost mammograms throughout Nashville in a partnership between Metro Public Health and Ascension Saint Thomas. Only about 16% of Davidson County residents who qualify for free mammograms get one. Listen, I had my first mammogram last year, and while uncomfortable, it was definitely worth it. The mobile mammogram’s next stop is at the Lentz Public Health Center in East Nashville on June 26. [WPLN]

🏠 Houses Are Expensive, Y’all

No one reading this will be surprised that Tennessee’s median home prices far outpace the national average. According to a recent report, one reason for this is single-family zoning, which prevents apartments and multiple units from being built in certain neighborhoods. More competition for fewer homes means higher prices. [Tennessee Lookout]

🚨 Demands Made to Address MNPD Abuses

In a press conference yesterday, Community Oversight Now leaders presented a list of seven demands to be addressed by the Mayor's office and Metro Council in light of the recent 61-page complaint against MNPD. Some of the demands include an independent investigation of MNPDabuses, establishing a whistleblower complaint system, and that Chief Chris Gilder, Assistant Chief Mike Hagar, and Don Aaron — all named in the complaint — be put on administrative leave until investigations are complete.
