🏳️🌈 How to celebrate Pride Month in Nashville
June 2, 2025 · 💌 Margaret Kingsbury
Happy Monday! There’s a fancy schmancy house for sale in Brentwood, and I need someone to buy it and then invite me over so we can reenact scenes from Jane Austen novels. Pretty please? 🫶

What's CITY Talking About?

❓ Is Nashville Safe?
With headlines about immigration raids, school safety, and rising pedestrian and cyclist deaths, many Nashvillians are asking: Is our city still safe? On today’s City Cast Nashville podcast, we’re sitting down with Vice Mayor Angie Henderson to unpack how Metro is addressing growing safety concerns. [🎧 City Cast Nashville]
🪧 Dollar General Employees Protest
On Thursday, employees at the Antioch Dollar General protested unsafe working conditions. “We’re trying to get Dollar General to put some proactive safety measures into their stores instead of waiting for somebody to get hurt,” a protestor explained. The DG board and shareholders previously voted down a proxy asking for safer working conditions. [Nashville Banner]
🍲 SNAP Benefits in Trouble
The Contributor nonprofit newspaper and a dozen beneficiaries have filed a class action lawsuit against the Tennessee Department of Human Services for frequent, mistaken denials of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program applications, the state’s version of food stamps. Meanwhile, the federal government is considering slashing funding for SNAP. [WPLN]

🏙️ Nashville Listed as a Sanctuary City
The Department of Homeland Security has added Nashville to its list of sanctuary cities, a term used for jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with immigration authorities. The delineation could lead to felony charges, as a Tennessee law criminalizes sanctuary city policies. In a Friday press conference, O’Connell denied any wrongdoing. [WKRN]
- The state legislature voted earlier this year to make it a felony for any local public official to vote in favor of “sanctuary policies,” a move likely targeted at Nashville. [🎧 City Cast Nashville]
