🍝 ‘Largest Rollback of Hunger Relief in U.S. History’

Cuts to USDA programs and SNAP benefits in President Trump’s budget bill mean Second Harvest of Middle TN is working overtime to support our food-insecure neighbors — and keep local farmers in business. On today’s City Cast Nashville podcast, we’re talking with them about the impact of those cuts on our community, and why all hope isn’t lost. [🎧 City Cast Nashville]

🏫 Gun Safety in Parks and Schools

  • Metro Parks is adding armed security to community centers. The measure has been one year in the making, following the murder of Alyssa Lokits while running on the Mill Creek Greenway. [WKRN]
  • Tennessee is the first state to pass a law requiring annual gun safety training in schools, starting in kindergarten. Metro Nashville Public Schools is still exploring the best way to implement the new law in an age-appropriate manner, and plans to have guidance in place by next semester. [The Tennessean]

🍸 ‘It’s Too Expensive of a Test’

Metro Councilmember Olivia Hill believes she’s the victim of drink spiking, but the ER refused to run tests for drink-spiking drugs due to the expense. Vanderbilt University Medical Center says patients can only receive a full toxicology screening if they are victims of sexual assault. Hill says she’s working on legislation to close that testing loophole so anyone can be tested. [WSMV]

🗳️ Candidates Kick Off Campaigns To Replace Ogles

Several candidates have kicked off their campaigns to replace U.S. Representative Andy Ogles (TN-05), the latest being Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder, who’s running as a Democrat. Elections will be held next year. [Nashville Banner]

⭐ My event pick of the week: The Nashville Fair! The fair lasts all week. My favorite part is the agricultural and craft exhibits to see what Nashville’s been growing and creating! My daughter, of course, loves the rides.
