🤔 What’s Vegas sending us now?

March 6, 2026 · 💌 Margaret Kingsbury

Happy Friday! In case you missed it: City Cast just dropped a brand new podcast. It’s called “Your City Could Be Better” — because it could be! Every week, our CEO David Plotz chats with my colleagues from across the 13 City Cast teams about the weird things our cities are trying, where they’re growing, and how they’re succeeding.

This week’s episode takes us to Salt Lake City, where a national think tank wants to institutionalize unhoused people, regardless of what locals think.

On a dark yellow background, the silhouette of a white city. Text reads "Your city could be better with David Plotz"

“Your City Could Be Better” has also featured conversations about how the anti-ICE movement in the Twin Cities mobilized so quickly, the backlash against data centers in Madison, and an unusual plan that’s got dozens of new storefronts opening quickly in downtown Pittsburgh.

Check the episodes out now on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.

🏗️ Tesla Tunnel Faces Opposition

Tuesday’s Metro Council meeting lasted more than five hours, and councilmembers passed several resolutions, including one opposing The Boring Company’s Music City Loop. We talk about it and more news from the week on today’s podcast. [🎧 City Cast Nashville]

🌨️ Storm Relief Resolutions

The Metro Council also approved two measures to aid in Winter Storm Fern relief. One resolution would allow the assessor of property to lower residents’ 2026 property assessment if their property was damaged during the storm, decreasing property taxes. Another gives a one-time credit on water and sewer bills. [WSMV]

🏛️ Controversial Immigration Bill Progresses

On Wednesday, hundreds of people, including many students, protested a pair of amended bills that would require public schools to track and report students’ immigration status. One bill passed a subcommittee, while the second, more aggressive bill was deferred by a week. [Nashville Banner]

🚨 Local Journalist Detained

Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Nashville Noticias staffer Estefany Rodríguez on Wednesday, and she is en route to an ICE processing center in Louisiana. I interrupt your regularly scheduled Furball Friday with an urgent message from the Nashville Humane Association. The nonprofit’s shelter is at maximum capacity due to an uptick in animals that have been abandoned on its property. If you’re able, consider fostering or adopting.

Last weekend, our podcast host Marie Cecile Anderson volunteered at NHA’s annual fundraiser, and showcased this adorable shelter pup Oliver!
