🏛️ March Madness at the state legislature?

March 13, 2026 · 💌 Margaret Kingsbury

TGIF! Are you looking for more podcasts to listen to? Y’all might have heard that City Cast just launched a new podcast called “Your City Could Be Better.” It’s usually hosted by our CEO David Plotz, but this week, we’ve got two city hosts hopping on to break down a really important issue: Federal policing. Chicago’s Jacoby Cochran is talking with D.C.’s Mike Schaffer about a new D.C. law that aims to hold federal agents accountable.

If police reform isn’t your cup of tea, I bet one of our other episodes will peak your interest. Episodes drop every Friday, and in them, our CEO David Plotz chats with different hosts and producers from the 13 City Cast teams. So far, they’ve touched on anti-ICE protests, homelessness, and creative plans to revitalize downtowns. If you love your city and complain about it anyway, this is the podcast for you.

What's CITY Talking About

🏛️ March Madness at the State Legislature?

A popular bill that would bar corporations from purchasing more than 100 single-family homes in a single community in order to rent them passed the state Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support, yet when it came to a House subcommittee, Rep. Bo Mitchell (D-Nashville) shot it down. Why? We’re talking about it and more news from the week on today’s podcast. [🎧 City Cast Nashville]

🗳️ One Step Closer To State & Federal Elections

Tennessee’s Secretary of State has finalized the list of candidates for the 2026 state and federal elections. All three congressional seats in Nashville are on the ballot, as well as our state House seats, some state Senate seats, and the governor. [Tennessee Lookout]

🏗️ Development Stalls Amid Racetrack Debate

It’s been eight years since a landmark community benefits agreement with Nashville SC’s Geodis Park allotted a portion of adjacent, city-owned land for affordable housing and a child care facility. The developer partnering with Nashville SC on the project, MarketStreet Enterprises, claims the uncertainty surrounding the Fairground Speedway and its possible expansion has forced them to put plans on hold. ☕ Local Coffee Shop Loses Labor Dispute

Barista Parlor has lost a National Labor Relations Board case for violating workers’ rights in 2023, after failing to follow through on a settlement. They must post a “Notice to Employees” sign, pay back wages with interest, and offer employees full reinstatement of their positions. The owner claims the settlement “destroyed” the business. Currently, the Tennessee legislature is considering a bill that would end daylight saving time and adopt permanent standard time. For context, if we adopt permanent standard time, our earliest sunrise would be 4:29 a.m., and our latest sunset would be 7:08 p.m. Some argue we should adopt permanent daylight saving time, where our latest sunrise would be 7:58 a.m., and earliest sunset would be 5:32 p.m.

What do you think about time changes? Take this poll, and I’ll share the results in a future newsletter!

Furball Friday

Marty Swinehart — named after Marty McFly from “Back to the Future” — loves to wrestle with blankets and chew the corners. His favorite food is chicken tenders, and he enjoys snuggling on the couch while his humans watch TV. His snoring is LOUD. But with that adorable face, what can you do?
