What's CITY Talking About

🧑‍🍳 The Neighborhood Program Creating New Chefs

When Chef Sterling Wright left the reality show “Hell’s Kitchen” in 2014, he could have gone to work in any restaurant around the world. Instead, he came home to Nashville’s J.C. Napier Homes, launched Joy Kitchen, and started teaching the kids in the neighborhood how to cook. On today’s podcast, we’re chatting with him and two of his students about the program and how it teaches kids about confidence and community. [🎧 City Cast Nashville]

🌿 Will Pot Be Legalized in Tennessee?

The Tennessee state legislature is considering three marijuana bills this week. Two bills would require county election commissions to include ballot questions related to medical marijuana use and its legalization on the November ballot. A third, the Pot for Potholes Act sponsored by Sen. Heidi Campbell and Rep. Aftyn Behn, would legalize recreational marijuana and use its tax revenue to repair roads. [WSMV]

🏛️ State Democrats Consider New Rules

State House Democrats are considering new rules that would forbid Democrats currently in office from supporting any primary opponents to another sitting Democrat. This comes after discord between local Democrats when Rep. Bo Mitchell failed to second a bill proposed by Sen. Charlane Oliver and Rep. Aftyn Behn, leading to threats of a primary challenge against Rep. Bo Mitchell. [🔐 The Tennessean]

🖤 Local Black Journalist Honored

A new historic marker honors Robert Churchwell, the first Black journalist to work as a full-time reporter for a Southern newspaper. Churchwell began writing full-time for the Nashville Banner in 1950, which was then owned by an overtly racist publisher. The marker is located at the Robert Churchwell Museum Magnet Elementary School in North Nashville. [Nashville Banner]
