Today’s Top Story: What’s Happening at Metro Council

🏘️ Making History With Affordable Housing
At Tuesday’s Metro Council meeting, councilmembers approved $40.2 million in grants to preserve and create 1,106 homes across Nashville. The funding comes through the Barnes Housing Trust Fund, and will support 14 nonprofit organizations. It’s the largest single round of affordable housing funding in Nashville’s history. The goal is to help people who work in the city afford to live here. [NewsChannel 5]
🚦 Right Turn Legislation Deferred
Councilmembers once again deferred voting on the contentious No Right on Red legislation. Instead, the council’s budget, transportation, and public safety committees will consider the bill ahead of Metro Council’s Oct. 20 meeting. While the number of intersections affected by the bill has been scaled back, CM Jacob Kupin is trying to eliminate even more in his downtown district. The bill’s sponsor, CM Sandra Sepulveda, argues the legislation is necessary to prevent more pedestrian deaths. [Nashville Banner]
🏢 Programs To Help Small Businesses
Councilmembers passed Mayor Freddie O’Connell’s small and long-lasting local business grant incentives. The Legacy Business Program will help businesses that have operated in Nashville for 15 years or more, while the Workforce Advancement Incentive Program helps small businesses recruit and retain employees. The application window will likely open in November. [Nashville Scene; Nashville.gov]
🏛️ More Metro Council Business
In exchange for bonds issued by Davidson County, RiverGate Mall developers will pay more in taxes, utilizing a new special tax district for the first time in Nashville. Councilmembers also chose Deonté Harrell to represent the council on the Contract and Compliance Board, and advanced legislation to establish dedicated revenue streams to fund multimodal infrastructure. 🏥 Christa Pike Is Awake & Speaking
After the Tennessee Department of Correction failed to execute Christa Pike by lethal injection last week, the 50-year-old has been recovering in the hospital — shackled to her bed, according to her legal team. Her lawyers confirmed Tuesday that Pike had regained consciousness and was speaking, though they wrote, “Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery.” [WPLN]
🎶 New Music Venue Disrupts Neighborhood
Live Nation’s newest music venue, The Truth, has been open for less than a week, and some Wedgewood-Houston neighbors say long lines, traffic backups, and major parking problems on show days make it difficult to get to and from their homes. District 17 Metro Councilmember Terry Vo plans to meet with Live Nation, NDOT, WeGo, and community partners to discuss concerns as the venue continues its packed schedule. In the meantime, she encourages people to walk, bike, carpool, or utilize the new bus stop out front. [WKRN]

👮 Sheriff Announces Retirement
Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall is retiring after 24 years in the department to seek opportunities in the private sector. Hall is currently serving his seventh term as sheriff. He was the youngest person ever elected to the office, and the longest-serving. Metro Council will appoint an interim sheriff next month, and voters will cast their ballot for a new sheriff in 2027.
